Video footage has emerged of Atletico Madrid supporters singing a sickening racist chant directed towards Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr ahead of the Madrid derby at the Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday night. 

Hundreds of Atletico supporters can be heard singing “Vinicius, you are a monkey, you are a monkey”, as Real Madrid continued to claim 2 -1 for winning matches.

Local media also reported that monkey noises and the slogan “Vinicius, die” could be heard throughout the game. Atletico Madrid did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but tweeted: “Support Atlético with passion and respect for opponents.”

The Spanish league yesterday opened an investigation into the racist abuse against Real Madrid’s Brazilian forward Vinicius Jr. at Atletico Madrid’s Civitas Metropolitano stadium on Sunday night.

La Liga will study the audio and video evidence before submitting its report to the Spanish Anti-Violence Commission. State bodies have the power to fine clubs or force them to play behind closed doors.

Despite the seriousness of the incident, only fines are expected; stadium closures look unlikely.
